Surgical Oncology

Surgery plays a key role in the management of all Solid organ cancers. All these cancer treatment facilities are available in Surgical Oncology department. Whenever any new patient comes to the institute, it gets registered in the surgical department as per the site of the cancer. Initial work-up of the patient like biopsy and staging of the patient is done here. Once properly investigated the treatment plan is outlined. Those patients fit to be operated upfront undergo direct surgery, otherwise advanced cases undergo neoadjuvant treatment before undergoing radical surgery.

Most of the high end cancer surgery are performed in the department. Organwise commonly performed surgeries are as follows :

• Breast – Modified radical mastectomy, breast conservation surgery, Oncoplasty, Breast reconstruction surgery


• Upper GI – Radical Gastrectomy , Esophagectomy


• Hepato Pancreatico biliray (HPB)- Whipples Pancreatico duodenectomy, Radical cholecystectomy


• Lower GI – Hemicolectomy (Open & Lap), Low Anterior Resection (Open & Lap), Abdominoperineal Resection (Open & Lap)


• Genito Urinary – Radical nephrectomy, Partial Nephrectomy, Radical Cystectomy, Radical Prostatectomy, Penectomy, Orchidectomy, RPLND


• Head and Neck – Composite Resectionand reconstruction, Glossectomy, Thyroidectomy, Parotidectomy


• Bone Soft tissue – Limb Salvage surgery, Amputation


• Thoracic – Chest wall tumour, Thymoma, Lung Cancer

Surgical Oncology department is running MCh course approved by NMC from 2017 onwards with yearly intake of two students and is affiliated to Utkal University. From 2024 onwards it is now affiliated to the newly formed Odisha University of Health Sciences (OUHS). The students are selected from NEET-SS examination counseling.

To run this course the department is having experienced faculty members with the requisite qualification as per NMC guidelines.
