About AHPGIC, Cuttack

This Institute of Cancer is governed by a Governing Body under the Chairmanship of the Hon'ble Minister, Health & Family Welfare, Odisha as per the rules and regulations of the Government of Odisha and its own Bye-laws. There is an Executive Committee chaired by the Secretary to Govt. of Odisha, Department of Health & FW to supervise the affairs of the society, issue directions and empower the Director as they deem proper to attain the over all objectives subject to the guidelines issued by the Governing Body. Besides, various Sub-committees are constituted as per the approval of the Governing Body.

The Tumour board of this institute is being held everyday just after the OPD-hour. Each cancer case is discussed in the board and treatment protocol is decided. A Medical Referral Committee consisting of the tumour board and two other members like the Superintendent and the HoD, Dept. of Surgery, SCB Medical College & Hospital, Cuttack decide about the outside state referral of the cancer cases. Many poor patients have been benefitted by way of getting relief from different sources such as Chief Minister's Relief Fund, Prime Minister's National Relief Fund, recently introduced Health Minister’s cancer patient fund and RAN scheme of the Govt.of India etc. Poor patients, BPL card holders and their families are treated free of cost.

The post-graduate course leading to MD (Radiotherapy) was continuing here since 1973, the 1st batch of which had successfully completed the course in 1975. There is a Library for the PG- students and the staff of this centre with about 260 books & 150 journals under the charge of a senior medical officer of this Institute. PG-Seminar and Symposia are being held at regular intervals. The doctors of this institute are being updated in their respective field of modern science & technology by attending symposia, Seminars, Workshops and conferences at national and international levels.

Air conditioners and cable-TV connections have been provided in the patient wards for comfort and entertainment.

Objectives:

1. To undertake basic, applied and statistical research in various specialties of oncology.

2. Generation of technical and scientific man-power in collaboration with other Medical Colleges of the State.

      • To organize and conduct under-graduate, post-graduate and doctoral training courses for medical personnel.

      • To organize and conduct PG & doctoral courses in Radiation Physics, Immunology, Bio-Chemistry, Radiation  Pathology, Radio-Biology, Cyto-Genetics, Cell-Biology, Molecular Biology and Cancer Epidemiology.

      • To organize paramedical courses in Laboratory science, Nuclear Medicine, Radiotherapy, Radiodiagnosis, Cytology, Nursing and Cancer epidemiology.

      • To train medical professionals in Oncology.

3. To provide modern and advanced clinical services to cancer patients in collaboration with the Medical Colleges of the state.

4. To institute professorship, readership, fellowship and other teaching & research positions for the above purposes.

5. To design preventive services for the General Health Care, Delivery System for extension to other areas.

6. To conduct lectures, seminars, study groups, workshops, conferences on problems related to cancer.

7. To organize hospital based tumor-registry on modern lines.

8. To institute and maintain an up-to-date library, related to various specialties of cancer.

9. To publish research papers, treaties, books and periodicals & other literatures relating to various specialties of cancer.

10. To work in collaboration with other medical institutions, Health Service Department, other Universities, aid agencies and institutions of repute and to co-ordinate with other societies in the pursuit of any of the above objects.

11. To perform all such acts as may be necessary or appropriate or incidental for achievement of any or all of the above objects.

The ecosystem of Odisha cancer care has undergone a metamorphosis in the recent past. AHPGIC is playing the leading role in this transformation. On completion of the construction of the new LINAC building the bed strength of the Institute is enhanced from 281 to 507. Three new radiotherapy bunkers have been constructed. Two state of the art Linear Accelerators are installed. A new Brachy Therapy system strengthened the capability of intracavitary radiotherapy service. A PETCT scan installed on PPP mode to provide free service under NIDAN scheme. This is the first such an imaging unit under the State Government. The pathology & allied departments have also undergone a massive transformation. Tumor markers, IHC studies, Biochemical tests, Culture sensitivity added strength to the diagnostic services. Molecular studies have been initiated under Nidan scheme on PPP mode, the cost which is borne by the state government.

With the appointment of a medical gastro-enterologist the endoscopy services are now handled by a high-quality professional. Dedicated Plastic & Reconstructive surgeon, Nuclear medicine specialist fulfilled the longstanding gaps in the service. One more operating room and a 20 bedded central ICU added to the infrastructure. An international service provider identified through a transparent method is providing comprehensive maintenance services (CFMS) to the entire Institute. This has changed the face of the center. MD in anesthesiology (two seats), MD in pathology (four seats) and diploma in radiotherapy technician (DRTT, 10 seats) started in the Institute.

The Institute is under the process of full digitalization. Besides development of AHPGIC, under Odisha Comprehensive Cancer Plan (OCCP)1029 Cr is sanctioned for 11 cancer wings dispersed all over the state. This will improve the accessibility of cancer care for the entire population. Cancer is going to be major health challenge in the future. Odisha government is committed to improve its infrastructure to meet the challenge.
