The Department of Medical Oncology plays a vital role in the management of cancer cases. The main function of this division is to provide therapeutic care for patients suffering from a wide range of malignant neoplasms—particularly hematological malignancies, lymphomas, and solid tumors—using chemotherapy. This is administered across various treatment settings, including primary therapy, concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CT/RT), neoadjuvant therapy prior to surgery or radiotherapy (RT), and adjuvant therapy following surgery or RT. The faculty members of Medical Oncology also teach and guide Radiotherapy postgraduate (PG) students on chemotherapy protocols. In addition, doctors and paramedical staff from different districts are trained in daycare chemotherapy administration at regular intervals under the Department of Medical Oncology; these trained professionals then provide follow-up care to cancer patients in District Headquarters Hospitals (DHHs) across Odisha. Furthermore, the Department of Medical Oncology features a dedicated Pediatric Oncology wing to treat children coming to the center. Finally, a 30-bed Daycare Unit operates under the department to accommodate patients receiving chemotherapy on an outpatient basis.
